Council Fencing & Coastal Steelwork for Thames Coromandel

When you’re building for public spaces, “good enough” doesn’t cut it. Every weld, every bolt, every detail needs to be right the first time. Why? Because the community relies on it. That’s why Thames Coromandel District Council (TCDC) trusts our team for fencing, gates, accessways, and coastal steelwork across some of the busiest sites in the region.

And with SHE Prequal certification, certified welding procedures, and fully compliant rigging and lifting gear, we meet the standards councils expect long before we step onto site.

Ferry Landing wharf repairs by Alted Engineering

Built for the Coast, Built to Council Standards

Coastal conditions are unforgiving. Salt air, constant movement, public traffic, and exposure to the elements all demand steelwork that goes beyond off-the-shelf solutions.

That’s exactly what we delivered in two recent TCDC projects, Whitianga Wharf and Ferry Landing.

Whitianga Wharf fencing upgrade

This project required a strong, long-lasting fencing system that tied in with the existing layout, met council safety requirements, and could handle marine conditions day after day.

Our team delivered:

  • A new fence design aligned with existing infrastructure

  • Replacement of the lightweight setup with a fabricated, heavy--duty solution

  • Solid mounting and capped posts for long-term durability

  • Fabrication that integrates into both the concrete nib wall and lower wharf level

Ferry Landing walkway rebuild

With ferries running every 30 minutes, downtime wasn’t an option. The team rebuilt the entire walkway while the ferry remained fully operational! And no one got wet.

Works included:

  • Removal of the old soft fibreglass decking

  • Installation of 8 mm aluminium sheeting, glued and riveted

  • New carpet for comfort underfoot

  • 3 m grip edges for anti-slip safety

  • Barrier arms and clear pedestrian flow signage

A tight deadline, a high-traffic environment, and zero disruption required – the sort of job where precision and planning matter. The walkway reopened looking sharp, compliant, and built to last.

Why Certification Matters for Council Projects

Public sites demand documented, compliant processes. Councils in our region choose partners who prove – not just promise – safe, repeatable, traceable standards.

  • SHE Prequal Certified

As a SHE Prequal supplier, we meet council-level requirements for health, safety, documentation, and risk management. It sets the bar for how we operate: consistently, transparently, and with no shortcuts.

  • Certified Welding to NZ Standards

Our workshop recently completed a full round of welding certifications:

  • 2x single bevel butt joints

  • 1x single-layer fillet weld

  • All tested to AS/NZS 1554.1:2014 SP

  • Certified welder to AS/NZS ISO 9606-1:2017

This gives us qualified Weld Procedure Specifications (WPSs) for structural steel – critical for public infrastructure work.

  • Inspected Lifting & Rigging Gear

Every sling, chain, shackle, and hook is inspected, tagged, logged, and certified annually by Steel & Tube Rigging.

It’s not the glamorous side of engineering, but it’s the part that keeps people safe and projects compliant.

Fabrication, Welding & Safety You Can Trust

From fencing on wharves to walkways, gates, and accessways, council projects require a level of precision and durability that only certified fabricators can deliver.

Our team at Alted:

  • Always start with the design process in SOLIDWORKS (for accuracy!)

  • Fabricate in our Tairua workshop using galvanised or marine-grade materials

  • Provide on-site installation with certified rigging and lifting equipment

  • Deliver a clean, tidy finish that meets safety and environmental standards

This isn’t production-line steelwork. Every project is carefully planned, modelled, fabricated, and installed to suit the exact site and its conditions - bespoke at its best.

Smart Gates & Fencing for Public Environments

Across the Coromandel, the gates, fencing, and coastal steelwork we build are shaped by the environments they’re made for – high foot traffic, salt air, existing structures that need integrating into, and the need for long-lasting, low-maintenance performance. From pool barriers to wharf fencing and access control systems, every project reflects the realities of the site and the conditions it faces.

Being based in Tairua means we know these environments well. That local understanding shows up in the materials we select, the way we fabricate, and how we install on challenging coastal sites.

It’s why builders trust us, why TCDC turns to us for public infrastructure work, and why these projects continue to perform long after the tools are packed away.
