On the Coromandel, a gate or fence has to do a lot more than look good. It has to handle wind, salt air, steep driveways, tricky boundaries, and clients who want a solution that performs without dominating the view.
Over the past couple of years, weβve built dozens of custom gates, fences, balustrades, and handrails across Tairua, Whitianga, Pauanui, Ferry Landing, and beyond. Each one was designed to suit their unique space (not the other way round!).
Here are eight of the most effective and most requested solutions we deliver for coastal and challenging sites from our workshop in Tairua.
1. Coastal-Safe Galvanised Steel Fencing, Tairua
Durable, subtle, and compliant, this design was engineered to protect views and meet council requirements.
One of our standout Tairua installs involved creating a fence system that secured the property without compromising the harbour and bar views. The brief included aesthetics, council compliance, and working within a strict boundary so nothing encroached on the reserve.
What we delivered:
Around 1m fence height to preserve views
Fully galvanised steel that naturally weathers to a soft matte grey
A custom bi-fold gate system with a hold-back mechanism
GSM-automated sliding gate (open via text or phone)
Magnetic, lockable pedestrian latches
Clean installation across varied, sloping terrain
The result is one of those jobs where everything just works β durable, discreet, and practical.
π Location: Tairua
π Materials: Galvanised steel
π Key challenge: Preserve views + meet TCDC requirements
2. Sustainable Pool Fencing Using Existing Materials, Manaia Road, Tairua
Blending reuse, compliance, and coastal durability.
This pool fencing upgrade asked us to reuse as much of the existing materials as possible while fabricating new sections to complete the project.
What we delivered:
Reinstated existing fencing where possible
Fabricated new sections to suit the layout
Modified selected pieces for fit and compliance
Used 316 stainless steel tubing for longevity and corrosion resistance
The final result is a smart balance between sustainability and craftsmanship β compliant, durable, and clean-lined.
π Location: Manaia Road, Tairua
π Materials: 316 stainless + reused components
π Key challenge: Mix old and new seamlessly
3. Bespoke Handrails Along a Sloped Retaining Wall, Tairua
Safety, slope geometry, and visual integration.
At Fantail Terrace, we partnered with Hamilton-based builders Measured Construction to install a combination of indoor and outdoor handrails designed for both access and safety.
Key features:
Garage handrails for internal access
Large exterior handrail system following a retained wall
Designed to complement the home and surrounding landscape
Installed on a steep, uneven grade requiring accurate onsite alignment
These handrails prove that safety features can be both functional and architectural.
π Location: Fantail Terrace, Tairua
π Materials: Steel handrail system
π Key challenge: Sloped, uneven site
4. Handrails with Panoramic Coastal Views, Ferry Landing
Marine-grade fabrication for one of the most exposed sites on the Peninsula.
Coastal properties need products that last. At Ferry Landing, we fabricated custom steel handrails that deliver both safety and a clean, modern look.
Why steel was the right choice:
Exceptional durability in marine environments
Strong, low-visual-profile design
Minimal maintenance compared to timber or aluminium
Perfect for exposed sites where salt air is a daily factor
A rewarding project with a stunning backdrop.
π Location: Ferry Landing, Coromandel
π Materials: Steel handrails
π Key challenge: High salt exposure
5. Custom Gabion Basket Panels for Coastal Homes, Whitianga Waterways
When off-the-shelf wonβt handle the load, you engineer your own.
These tall gabion baskets needed to hold 100 mm river stones without blowing out. Parked next to the Whitianga Waterways, coastal winds and salt air would be chewing through standard options.
What we delivered:
75Γ75Γ5 mesh and 75Γ6 EA
Galvanised for coastal durability
Custom-fitted around existing structural steel
Bolted sections forming a rigid, seamless basket
Designed, fabricated, and installed by the Alted crew
π Location: Whitianga Waterways
π Materials: Heavy-duty galvanised mesh + EA
π Key challenge: Load-bearing + coastal exposure
6. Commercial Wharf Fencing Upgrade, Whitianga Wharf
Public infrastructure needs serious longevity, plus a tidy, cohesive finish.
For this Thames Coromandel District Council upgrade, our task was to replace a tired, lightweight setup with something robust enough for long-term public use.
What we delivered:
New fencing aligned with existing surrounds
Heavy-duty fabricated solution
Solid mounting for high-traffic durability
Capped posts for weather protection
Integration into both the concrete nib wall and lower wharf level
Coastal, public, long-lasting. That's right, built tough and built right.
π Location: Whitianga Wharf
π Materials: Heavy-duty galvanised steel
π Key challenge: Public-use durability
7. Sliding Gates for Angled, Sloping Driveway, Tairua
Geometry, slope alignment, powder coating, and small-dog-proof spacing.
This custom sliding gate needed to solve both practical and aesthetic challenges, including keeping a very determined small dog in.
What we delivered:
Geometry set to suit the slope
Gaps no wider than 90mm
Powder-coated to match the home
Lockable latches for easy access
Smooth, stable sliding action
A fantastic example of engineered problem-solving meeting architectural design.
π Location: Tairua
π Materials: Powder-coated steel
π Key challenge: Sloped site + dog-proofing
8. Smart Under-Deck Storage Sliding Gates, Pauanui Waterways
Reusing leftover building materials, definitely a clever way to blend sustainability with custom fabrication.
Our client had aluminium louvre profiles left over from their house build and asked if we could turn them into sliding storage gates. Absolutely.
What we delivered:
Reused louvre profiles
RHS frames fabricated from reused material
Fresh coating applied after sanding and prep
Ball-bearing rollers for smooth sliding
Low-profile top guide rail for stability
Sleek, subtle, practical. A standout example of smart design in a coastal environment.
π Location: Pauanui Waterways
π Materials: Aluminium louvre profiles + RHS
π Key challenge: Reuse + limited under-deck space
