Custom Waler Beams for Retaining Wall Reinforcement

Precision fabrication meets serious ground pressure.

When you’re reinforcing a retaining wall that’s supporting tonnes of earth pressure, off-the-shelf just won’t cut it. That’s why Alted Engineering was brought in to fabricate a set of continuous waler beams designed to span between piles and anchor into 8-metre ground anchors—at every single connection.

Custom From the Ground Up

Engineered for strength and fabricated for fit, each beam was crafted from 150 PFC (parallel flange channel), with custom profiled plate and hot-dip galvanised to HDG900. With pre-positioned posts and anchor locations already set in the ground, our team had to work to extremely tight tolerances—there was no room for error.

“These weren’t your off-the-shelf components. The geometry had to be spot on from the start,” explains Bennet Gage-Brown, who oversaw the project’s design and fabrication process.

Installation Without a Hitch

With multiple angles in play and the help of Storm Contracting and an 8-tonne excavator, the walers were carefully craned into position. Thanks to detailed pre-planning and the use of heavy-duty washers and torque specifications, the system locked into place exactly as designed.

The Result: A Locked-In System

This kind of job highlights why custom fabrication matters. When it’s got to handle serious loads, fit precise anchor points, and go in cleanly the first time—Alted delivers.

Big thanks to the team at Waikato Development Ltd (WDL) for bringing us in to support this project.
